Standards-Based Performance Assessment Based Inventories
Introduction of the Class and Unit:
The SPA is designed for an Arabic level three class. The school is located in the Shawnee Mission district just outside of the Kansas City area. The district is made up of five high schools, but Arabic is only offered at West and South high schools. The level three class this SPA is intended for is in a combined class of levels two through six Arabic at the high school level. Students generally combine with level four for many of their activities, but in this case, they will have their own separate unit. Students meet on a modified block schedule, which means they meet in class for fifty minutes three times a week and for ninety minutes one day a week. The estimated time of completion of the unit is ten class periods. This includes the time to prepare and present the presentational portion of the unit.
The students have already been assessed on their abilities to conjugate past tense in first person singular. They learned how to do so through a unit on daily schedule. This unit is designed to build on that by introducing past tense in first person plural second person singular and plural, and third person singular and plural. By having students narrate about their family vacation then making recommendations to their peers, they will be exposed to all the different forms.
The intention of the unit is to create a real life situation relevant to their future and their relationship with the Arabic language and society. The unit is designed to understand travel in the Arab world and how it relates to travel in the United States. By the end of the unit students will be able to describe a vacation they took and be able to recommend the same vacation to their peers. Students will be able to identify cultural elements to their vacations, such as the challenges they will have traveling during the month of Ramadan when most people are fasting. Students will also be able to identify what clothes are permissible to wear depending on where they visit in the Arab world.
Before implementation of this unit, it is important to know that students have vocabulary knowledge of basic clothes items, foods, and some transportation. The unit vocabulary will introduce more transportation vocabulary and locations within a city, as well as build on the vocabulary knowledge they already have.
